Potassium Supplements

Importance of Potassium

Potassium is an essential mineral that is also an electrolyte. It makes electrical communication in our bodies possible. Potassium serves to create the electrical potential (electrical signaling capability) in our cells and serves as an important cofactor for enzymes.

Potassium has been shown to help prevent stroke, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Potassium has also been shown to help in the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension).

Always consult with you doctor prior to taking any potassium as it maybe contraindicated in certain medical conditions and when taking certain medications.

Potassium Deficiency

The average American is deficient in potassium and the U.S. Government has done national studies which measure the average adult American as getting about 2,500 mg a day in their diet, whereas the adequate intake of potassium for adults is 4,700 mg per day. Deficiency of potassium and low blood potassium is commonly called hypokalemia. Thiazide diuretics, alcoholism, vomiting or diarrhea, laxative overuse, anorexia nervosa, magnesium depletion and congestive heart failure increase the risk of hypokalemia.

Recommended Potassium Intake

The daily Adequate Intake (AI) for potassium as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine; Children 1-8, 3,000 mg/day; Age 9 – adult 4,700 mg/day.

                •  Children 1-8 years – 3,000 mg

                •  Children 9+ – 4,700 mg

                •  Adults – 4,700 mg

Which Form of Potassium is Best?

An important consideration when selecting a potassium supplement is its form. The potassium bicarbonate form helps to neutralize acid or alkalinize you. This is in marked contrast to a chloride form that will acidify you. Therefore note if the potassium you are getting is like that in fruits and vegetables, the bicarbonate form. It is wise to avoid potassium chloride.
